Original Copy of Basketball Rules Set to be Auctioned Off

On December 10, 2010, the original copy of basketball rules, written by basketball creator James Naismith, will be auctioned off. Written in 1891, the original rules have been owned by the Naismith family since the passing of James Naismith in 1939.

Prior to the auction, the rules have gained the interest of many purchasers, with bids going as high as $10 million. With the upcoming auction Naismith’s grandson and Founder and Director of the Naismith International Basketball Foundation, Ian Naismith, speculates that the original copy of the rules can sell for possibly $2 million. The intended proceeds from the auction are anticipated to directly fund the Naismith International Basketball Foundation, as the foundation has experienced a downturn as a result of the tough economy.

Friday Night Lights in Gardner, KS

Tonight will be one of the most anticipated moments in Gardner-Edgerton High School history when the GE Trailblazers take on the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints. And what makes this game even more electrifying is the fact that tonight’s game between two of Kansas’ premier high school football programs will air live on ESPN-U. Tonight’s game will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Gardner Edgerton District Activities Center.

St. Thomas Aquinas enters tonight’s battle fueled by unwanted memories of last season when they were defeated twice by Gardner-Edgerton (which happens to be the first time that GE beat St. Thomas Aquinas in school history.) On the other side of the pigskin, Gardner-Edgerton is led by their star QB Bubba Starling, who was recently selected to participate in the 2010 U.S. Army All-American game on January 8, 2011 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. In addition to being named a U.S. Army All-American, Starling has caught the eyes of several college football recruiters, and even Major League Baseball. While Starling hasn’t signed an official letter of intent to play collegiate football, he has verbally committed to Nebraska.

In honor of tonight’s big game, Gardner Mayor Dave Drovetta, will make an unofficial name change of the city of Gardner from Gardner, Kansas to ESPN, Kansas for the entire day of October 22nd.

Mayor Drovetta was quoted as saying:
This proclamation is to highlight the positive recognition that the Trailblazers have brought to the community of Gardner, and to celebrate the national recognition that will be brought to our community by the ESPN broadcast. Congratulations to both teams for the hard work that resulted in the national recognition of both programs.

Be sure to tune in to ESPN-U tonight at 7:00 p.m. to catch some amazing high school football. If you’re making plans to attend tonight’s game, ticket information can be found on the GE Trailblazers web site.

Ohio High School Female Kicker Eyes National Record

Who ever said that girls can’t kick like guys?! To prove that theory wrong, Firestone High School (Akron, Ohio) kicker Alana Gaither has proven that she can hold her own when it comes to kicking the pigskin through the uprights. With a 27 of 29 extra point record this year, Gaither has earned the respect of her fellow football teammates and her head coach.

[caption id="attachment_880" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="Photo via"][/caption]

In a recent game, Gaither kicked a 43-yard field goal that some say could have easily been a 48-yard kick. A soccer player turned football kicker, Alana was recruited by head coach Tim Flossie as a freshman while she was practicing on the soccer field kicking long range balls.

As of now, Alana Gaither’s 43-yard field goal could go in the history books as being the longest field goal made by a female kicker in the nation. To read more on Alana Gaither’s story, click here.

2010-2011 NBA Season Is Under Way

As the 2010-2011 NBA season is now under way, your fall season just got better. With the combination of the NFL, NBA, MLB playoffs and college football you'll never have a dull night of television.

After a summer of many interesting trade deals, one of the most anticipated preseason openers was that of the Miami Heat. Led by Dwyane Wade and the newly acquired, Lebron James and Chris Bosh, the Miami Heat were able to defeat the Pistons. But the Miami Heat had to win without their main leader, Dwyane Wade, as he left the preseason opener with a hamstring injury in the first quarter.

After a long summer without basketball you can now cheer for your favorite NBA team again. Don't miss out on this exciting year of basketball! For more preseason recaps and a complete listing of preseason NBA games, visit the NBA web site.
